When the author, Jon Krakauer, is speaking with Jim Gallien about his run in with Chris McCandless he begins to put in some input about Alaska. He says that Gallien was wondering whether he had picked up a crackpot with Jack London fantasies and that " Alaska has long been a magnet for dreamers and misfits, people who think unsullied enormity of the Last Frontier will patch all the holes in their lives" (4). Krakauer and Gallien speak of how Alaska is a magnet for people who think it is this amazing place because of a picture in a magazine. Also for those who become so obsessed with the novels and stories of Jack London that they want to live them out. The dreamers and misfits believe that they can go there to escape from all of their issues. They can live off of the land and not have to deal with society and the pressure set upon them. But they're wrong. There aren't many animals, the bugs will eat them alive, and the rivers are fast and unfriendly. These dreamers and misfits don't want to deal with the struggls of life so they decide to move out to the bush. Without putting much thought into it. When they do go to the bush, they are quick to learn that they've made a mistake.
