"I'm From Bug Juice and Pigtails"

I’m from wooden play sets,
And tire swings that stain my skin.
From jumping off of bunk beds into
cerulean and crimson mountains of blankets.
And playing dress up- sometimes starring my brother.
I’m from scrapes and bruises,
And swinging on the monkey bars with rough calloused hands.
From schoolyard crushes on cute boys with golden hair
And shattered hearts when I was a second choice.
I’m from lying in my mother’s lap as she
gently rubs my face to lull me to sleep,
And restless nights full of tossing and turning.
From walking in the valley with friends at night
As the crisp air numbs our faces, hands, and toes.
I’m from pretending to be an astronaut in the pilot seats,
And making wishes on shooting stars.
From horror movie marathons,
And chugging Code Red Mountain Dew to stay awake.
I’m from laughing until my sides hurt
And burning tears that stain my pillow.
From writing until I can no longer hold a pencil
And burying my nose in an adventure book.
I’m from escaping into fantasy worlds,
And singing until my voice is gone
In the middle of the hot sweaty crowd of a rock concert.
From dancing in a sparkly blue sequined dress
And finding a place where I feel like I belong.
And tire swings that stain my skin.
From jumping off of bunk beds into
cerulean and crimson mountains of blankets.
And playing dress up- sometimes starring my brother.
I’m from scrapes and bruises,
And swinging on the monkey bars with rough calloused hands.
