To Kill A Mockingbird journal entry
Tom Robinson is being accused of taking advantage of Ms. Mayella Ewell in a sexual manner. Atticus has been appointed as his lawyer to defend him. Although, they were told to stay at the house Dill, Jem, and Scout sneak into the courthouse and sit with Reverend Sykes in the colored balcony.
To me it was evident that this trial was not going to go well, as it is a black man defending himself from a white woman’s accusations. I sit reading with my fingers crossed the entire time. It was obvious that Mayella was lying. I do have to say that she would make a great actress. There were many flaws in the testimonies given that day. Almost as if they have their story together. Almost as if they were winging it and hoping the others would say something similar.
Tom’s left arm was severed in machinery at a young age. This would make it nearly impossible for him to blacken Mayella’s right eye when they were standing in front of each other. It would be impossible for him to do this while choking her at the same time. If only the jury could see it that way. The fact that Mr. Ewell was willing to risk an innocent man’s life just to keep his horrendous secret of what he did to his own daughter, disgusts me. I felt extremely upset when the jury found Tom to be guilty. I saw this verdict coming from a mile away, but I held on to that little bit of hope that the jury wouldn’t be blinded by race.
