“Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.”
(pg. 76)
When Scout asked him about the Tom Robinson case, Atticus honestly explained that he and Tom wouldn’t win. Scout then began to ask why he was even trying and that was his response. In the time the book is set race is a major issue as well as, social groups within society. There are many instances where race or wealth created problems in Scouts life. A few being the incident with Walter being a Cunningham, or Aunt Alexandra having a fit over Scout going to Calpurnia’s house for dinner. There was also Dolphus Raymond. Almost the entire town thought he was an awful man because he fell in love with an African American woman. Even the Ewells were out casted by the community because they only went to school for the first day and hardly had any money. Yet no matter what the other people said or did, these people kept on going with their normal lives. Just because everyone else thought they we’re different, or that what they were doing was wrong, it didn’t stop them from being who they are. During the trial it was a white man’s words against a black man’s yet Atticus was still going to try his best to get justice served. It was no reason for them “not to try to win.” Even if the odds were against them. Just because they were “licked a hundred years before,” didn’t mean it wasn’t worth a try to stand up there and give it their all. They would fight and fight until they couldn’t anymore. There’s always hope, even in the darkest situations. Along the journey people may fall down, run into obstacles, or get lost, but they still try. In sports there’s always going to be one person who was never an amazing player, but they still go out on the field and give it their all. If a person is beginning to play a new instrument, they are generally clueless on what to do. When learning to play they won’t get everything right and will mess up many times. If they try hard enough though, they could become a rock star, or a professional musician. It may not be entirely visible, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.
