Bigger Than Her Wings
In a land unknown to the mortal eye
live magnificent creatures. Unicorns run
through the emerald fields. Gorgeous mermaids
swim in the crystal lakes. Their carefully crafted
castles can be seen from the water’s surface. Fairies freely fly
over the lands and build their homes in the
Forest Of Dreams. Among these creatures
lives a fairy unlike any other.
Calypso has always been an outcast compared
to the other fairies in the forest. The boisterous
personalities of those around her are a large contrast
to her introverted tendencies. All of the other fairies fly
with grace, but Calypso on the other hand, doesn’t
go a day without tripping
over her own wings.
Today was no exception, for on her trip
to flight school she had fallen more times than she
could count. Arriving at school with
her mint green light hardly glowing, Calypso
decides that once again, today just isn’t
her day.
The atmosphere of school was usually bright
and bubbly, but today it was unusually dreary.
None of the other fairies were playing their
every day game of acorn soccer. Cautiously,
Calypso sits down on her designated leaf, waiting for
class to begin. The uneasy feeling in her stomach
was becoming unbearable.
“What could be wrong,” she wonders, “why is everyone
so sad?’ Her questions are answered as soon as
the teacher begins to talk.
“Today is a sad day in our land.
As many of your parents have told you already,
there has been an incident in which all
of the unicorns have been kidnapped. Our
protectors of the land are gone. This is
a heartbreaking thing and in no way can I imagine how anyone
could be so cruel. There are officials
of all kinds on the hunt for the unicorns and those
descendants of evil. At this moment in time,
we must all have hope that we will get
our albescent creatures back.
“Until we do, we have decided that class
will be canceled.” As her teacher comes to a teary eyed
close, Calypso is in shock. Her fellow fairy peers
are all cheering at the fact that class has been
cancelled. It appears they’ve forgotten the
reason as to why it is. Calypso feels like she is
the only one who really cares.
With a split second decision, she
decides that she will do anything it takes to
save the unicorns. She stands up, dusts herself off
and takes flight. Never allowing herself time to
have second thoughts. This is something she has to do.
This will show them that she is more than the
runt of the litter. That she is brave.
Twenty minutes later, Calypso finds
herself at the water’s edge. She begins to pace
upon the sand, brainstorming ideas of who
could have taken the creatures and where
they could be. Quickly, frustration sets in and the little
fairy is beginning to feel helpless.
Suddenly, there’s rustling in the
trees on the edge of the forest. Finding
a hiding spot behind a rock, Calypso waits for
the presence to break through the tree line. When it
finally does, she gasps.
“A pirate? How in the world could a pirate
have found our world? This can’t be real,” she thinks
to herself. The pirate was dressed in the nicest of robes.
Her bulky black boots shined in the sunlight. She
wasn’t alone either. Following behind her are five
muscular, dense looking men who are dressed in rags.
Behind them, Calypso sees what she has feared most. The
unicorns are tied up and are being herded to the forest’s edge.
The ropes are tied so tight that their snowy
coat is turning an angry crimson color. Muzzles are clipped
upon their mouths to keep them from making any noise. Just
as she is about to act, Calypso hears
the female pirate speak.
“Pick up the pace you idiots! They’re
onto us and we have to get to the other side
of this beach. You imbeciles brought us
out at the wrong spot. These unicorns should bring
us all the gold we need. If you’re lucky,
I won’t make you walk the plank,” She
says heatedly.
With a rush of adrenaline, Calypso takes flight
putting her split second plan into action.
She could no longer find safety in
being quiet and reserved. With the lives of the
unicorns on the line, she has no time for second guessing.
Stealthily she flies up next to the
pirate holding the ropes. Since he showed himself
to not be the brightest moonbeam in
the sky, Calypso believes that he is her best
bet. As gently as she can the small fairy
liftts a dagger from the marauder’s belt loop.
Boy is that finely crafted steel heavy.
The unicorns see what she is doing and
watch carefully. Knowing she is going to help them.
With a huff and a puff, the youngling sends
her wings into overdrive. The dagger is much bigger than
the fairy herself so she knows she only has one shot.
One perfect cut to make.
Taking a few deep breaths Calypso aims
and releases the weight. The ropes then begin to loosen with
a whoosh and a slice. From there, she unclips the
muzzle of the head unicorn--also know as the sheriff of
the forest-- and places the end of a rope
in his mouth. She repeats the motion for the second
in command. She then motions for one of them to
run right and the other run left. With a quiet
“One...two...three!” they were off.
The majestic creatures ran around the pirates,
herding them together and wrapping the ropes tightly around
them all. Yells of protest leave the heathens mouths at
a rapid rate, but there’s no escape.
During the round up, Calypso goes to the water’s edge
where she calls for the mermaids, saints of the the sea
to bring the rest of the town to the beach. With a flick of
their tails the sea dwellers speed off.
As the protectors of the forest come to the end of
the rope, Calypso, with her light glowing brightly with
pride, knots the ends of the rope together. Just as she
finishes, all of the creatures living in the forest
burst through the trees. Murmurs and gasps fill the air.
No one can believe that little Calypso has helped
catch the kidnappers.
“Silence,” the unicorn sheriff shouts as all noise ceases,
”Silence please. Everybody listen up. Today has
been both a terrifying and surprising day for us all. No one
ever expected anyone other than our kind’s to find our land, especially
not pirates. The protectors will be making sure
something like this never happens again. Through this fiasco,
we have found ourselves an unexpected hero. Calypso, savior of
the forest, has saved all of our lives today. She may be small,
but her bravery is much bigger than her wings.
“ Take this young fairy as an example. Allow her actions to
prove to you that anything is possible if
you put your mind to it. Probable? No. Possible? Yes.
We would like to make Calypso a junior protector.
Do you accept Calypso?” The Sheriff asks hopefully.
“Yes, yes, again and again yes,” the brave fairy
exclaims. Hoots, hollers, screams, and shouts erupt
from the crowd. Calypso, junior protector, would forever
be know as the little fairy that could.
