Advice to Freshman Response

“Don’t become someone you’re not just to fit in. Being yourself and only having a few true friends is way better than being fake ad having a fake friendship with fake people.”
Anthony, SJHS class of 2011
I have witnessed many friends become completely different people in order to fit in. One of my friends acted differently around me than around her other friends. She would act this way to become this so called popular and they felt the only way to do that was to change entirely. It was painful to see because I began to feel as if I wasn’t good enough, or I would become confused. If they weren’t going to be the person I became friends with while around these “popular” people, were they embarrassed to be my friend? If you have to change for someone to like you, your friendship with them isn’t true. You’d always be on your guard, and people may begin to see you as a two-faced person. When these people found someone they liked more, you’d be dropped and forgotten like a pencil in the school hallways. There are millions of people in the world. Why be just like someone else when you can be your own person? If someone doesn’t like me for me, it’s their loss. I learned a long time ago that it’s better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you’re not.
